Midwestern Winter Travel Woes

Oh The Weather Outside is Frightful!

The joys of traveling in the Midwest during winter can make anyone grey prematurely. We had “planned” to leave Peoria today around 3:00 – after picking Jackson up from school. However, a huge ice storm is predicted to arrive just about that time with ¾ of an inch of ice. That ice, on top of existing compact snow and slush makes for a precarious three hour drive north to Chicago.

Since hearing the news, we have re-arranged our schedule several times. We first pushed back to 1:00, and now we’re hoping for an even earlier departure time. Three hours and then we’ll be at the Intercontinental Hotel at O’Hare. I have big plans to put the boys to bed and then take a nice long bath before hitting the chaos at the airport tomorrow. I’m just wondering how many times Charlie will spit up on me and if I should even bother wearing my new velvety Christmas coat. Thankfully Brian’s traveling with us, so I’ll pass Charlie off to him after I give him a bottle.

Normally, we just worry about the weather in Chicago and Peoria. However, we may now have to “weather” the weather in Seattle as well (ha, ha, ha! I'm so puny!). It’s currently snowing in Seattle, and unlike the Midwest, the Northwest isn’t as well prepared for snow. People in the northwest don’t own snow blowers or have attachments on their trucks to move snow out of their driveway. Heck…I’m not sure many people in the Northwest own a snow shovel!

I don’t mind the snow as long as there is power in Seattle. For some odd reason, the south end of Mercer Island is always the LAST to get power restored during a power outage. I think it is ironic because my dad use to be Chief Counsel for PSE. Apparently he has no pull.

I’m looking forward to some Christmas snow (and power). It will be delightful to watch the snow fall from my parent’s house. After living in the Midwest now for two plus years, I try not to take for granted the snow-covered Evergreen trees.

I love sitting in front of my parent’s fireplace at night with the twinkling lights of Christmas. On clear nights, I can look across Lake Washington and see the Christmas lights on the homes in Renton. And the Christmas Ships gliding across the lake is always a treat.

Wish us luck! With some luck, patience and determination...we’ll be home for Christmas!

Disney World Bound:

Jackson and I were traveling to Florida and meeting up with Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Jeanette, Brandon and Hailey in Florida. The morning we were to leave, I asked Brian to please take Jackson downstairs so I could get organized. My request was ignored and I asked for a “little peace”. Jackson questioned: “a piece of what?”. After suppressing a giggle, I replied: “a piece of quiet!” That apparently registered in his three year old brain.

The airline trip was fine. Jackson is quite the little traveler and quickly made friends with the dance group in Midway, Chicago. He was dressed in khaki pants and his pin striped blazer and Cole Hahn shoes. What a little gentleman! When we arrived in Orlando, Jackson asked me if the shuttle was a ride. Easy to please at this age.

In Florida we spent the first day recuperating. We headed for downtown Disney and shopped and played at the Lego store. It was a cold day, but we still had fun.

The next day we hit the Magic Kingdom, wherein Jackson decided he did not like going up high in the Magic Carpet Ride or Dumbo. He liked the Jungle Cruise and said that was his favorite ride.

On Monday, we attempted to find the outlet stores and after an hour of looking, finally found them. Always a good time in the car. Felt like a scene out of Chevy Chase's Vacation series -- "Look kids! Big Ben!" We shopped a bit and then headed back for naps and some swim time.

Tuesday we headed off for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. For the same price of admission as the Magic Kingdom, it is my opinion that the park is overpriced. It was a glorified zoo/safari ride. Still…it was nice to see a park we had not been to. We met up with our friends Jen Sadlier and her two little girls. Jackson thrilled the crowds with his gyrating hip dance to the steel drums – who said white boys can’t dance?

Wednesday we dropped off Jeanette and the kids and then looked around at Disney’s Grand Floridian Hotel, the Boardwalk, and several other hotels. We headed back to the hotel for an afternoon in the pool with Grandma and Grandpa. It was so nice out! We got some sun and relaxed before going to the airport.

After such an eventful day, Jackson fell asleep on the plane. I had to wake him up when we arrived in Midway. Poor little guy was so tired. He kept complimenting me on my shoes and trying to help with the bags.

We finally got our rental car and right before exiting onto I-80 West, Jackson threw up in the backseat -- Nice! I managed to drive home despite the stench and we arrived in Peoria around Midnight. I'm just glad Jackson barfed in a rental!

Archival journal - November/December 2006

Thanksgiving 2006:

We had Thanksgiving at our neighbor’s home, the McGuires. It was an amazing meal and we all had a lot of fun. Bridget's meal was amazing and it was nice to be a part of a family when we were so far away from ours. After Thanksgiving, we started to pack for our trip to Chicago.

Chicago-November/December 2006:
We got off to a late start, but made it up to the Intercontinental Hotel around 3:00. We unpacked and then headed off to Daley Plaza for the Christmas Bavarian festival and tree lighting ceremony. They had tons of booths filled with Christmas trinkets and food. We stopped for some spiced wine, potato pancakes and a chocolate crepe. There were so many people there, that it was hard to move around. Jackson and I ultimately got separated from Brian during the actual tree lighting, and we heard several fights broke out in the crowd. Regardless, it was a wonderful event. On our way out, Jackson saw an “L train” decorated for Christmas and he yelled: “Look! It’s the Polar Express! Wait for me!!!” We had dinner at Jackson’s favorite place: The Rainforest Café.

On Saturday, we did a little bit of window shopping and spent time at the Lego store. We hit our favorite place: Pippins for Chicago style hot dogs and then made our way up the Mile to get a picture with Santa. Jackson told Santa he wanted a Donkey. When Santa inquired “why”, Jackson said: “So I can play with it.” Hmmm. Boys.

At 5:00 we watched Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive by boat to the Navy Pier and cut the ribbon celebrating the beginning of the Christmas season.

Sunday we went back to the Pier to watch “Happy Feet” on the IMAX screen before making the trip back to Peoria.

On the last day of November, we got hit with a huge snow storm. Thank goodness it was Friday and thank goodness I had been to the grocery store and the cleaning lady had come! We got about 18 inches of snow. On Friday, we were all stuck inside, although Brian was furiously trying to figure out how to get out, as he was schedule to fly out to Denver that afternoon for a Seahawks game on Sunday. As fate would have it, Brian was snowed in. We spent the day inside, and I made some comfort food for the boys to enjoy. In the evening, we ventured out into the snow and played.

On Saturday, our water wasn’t working. After hours of trying to find someone to come out to help, we finally found a plumber. Apparently there was a problem with our water softener. After getting the water back up and running, we continued shoveling snow. It took Brian four hours to shovel the driveway, and I spent a good two plus hours shoveling the sidewalk and a path in our backyard.

On Sunday, we made it out to Sams Club where we bought some supplies for our Christmas party on the 9th.

Schools were still closed on Monday and Tuesday, but by Wednesday things were getting back to normal despite the frigid temperatures.

On Saturday the 9th we had Brian’s regulatory work Christmas party. It was a huge success. Brian surprised me before hand with a diamond necklace and matching earrings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a full house and everyone enjoyed themselves. One paralegal got so toasted she let Jackson open up a couple of his Christmas gifts! Luckily, they were only books.

We spent Sunday recovering from all the Holiday “spirit” and didn’t venture out too far.

December 2006 -- memorable quotes from Jackson:
Getting out of the car on the way to swimming, I asked Jackson: “Why is it that you can’t listen to me?” Jackson responded: “I don’t know –it’s a secret”.

Getting dressed for our holiday party, I removed the towel wrapped around my hair and Jackson exclaimed: “Uh Oh mommy – you’re hair is a mess. It looks terrible.”

After the big snow, Jackson went outside to play with our neighbor, Cody. Cody and Jackson built a snowman. However, when Jackson came inside that night he said: “We put the hat on the snowman but he didn’t come to life!”.

Christmas 2006 -- traveling to Seattle.

We had a great time over Christmas 2006. First, we got stuck in Chicago on our way home due to the big wind storm in Seattle. Jackson and I had to stay in a hotel that night and try to fly out the next morning. While we arrived bright and early in Chicago, the hotel said that they could not give us a room until 3:00 p.m. They changed their mind after about an hour of Jackson and me camping out in the lobby with all our crap. Brian drove up to spend the night with us and help us get on the flight the next morning. I’m sure glad he was there, because they had forgotten to rebook Jackson!

The poor boy was so tired, that he fell asleep right away on the flight, only to wake himself up after about an hour because he had peed himself. Ahhh...the joys of traveling. Thankfully we were in the last row, so I let his pants dry over the seat. People love to sit around us when we travel.

Arriving in Washington, we were happy to see Grandma, Grandpa and Brandon. The power was still out, so we got Jackson’s hair cut, went to the mall and then had a late lunch before heading over to the Petersen’s.

I spent the night at Jeanette and Kurt’s, while Jackson went to M.I. to sleep between Grandma and Grandpa in the cold. The power was still out!

We ran more errands that day and then attended the Rainier Club’s Santa Supper that evening. Afterwards, we drove down to the lake to get out of the Petersen’s hair.

In Olympia, Jackson got to visit with Chelsea and see the great grandparents. We helped Great Grandma and Grandpa Burleson put up and decorate their tree, and we had all the great grandparents over for a pre-Christmas dinner. Jackson was so helpful in passing out food to the great grandparents. He also said a nice prayer before dinner.

After a couple days in Olympia, my dad decided to hook up a generator to the M.I. house to get some heat going. Stephanie and her kids were due to arrive on the 21st and the power was still out! We managed to get the tree up and decorated, and the generator made it possible for us to sleep in a warm, albeit dark home.

On the 19th, mom, Jeanette and I saw: White Christmas at the 5th Avenue. It was wonderful!

Brian arrived on the 20th and Steph and the kids arrived on the 21st. We decorated a train cake; watched movies and had a great time.

Brian and I visited with Margaret Redman, Brian Way, and other friends from high school. Before you knew it, it was Christmas Eve! Brian dressed up as Santa again, and all the kids went nuts. I think Matthew was a bit upset because he saw “dark hair” under Santa’s hat. I’m not sure how much longer Matthew will “believe”.

Christmas was great – even though we got off to a slow start waiting for the Petersens. Jackson got cooking stuff for his pretend Kitchen, he got a new back pack, train tracks a magic set/costume and an apron and hat for his kitchen.

We spent the next few days shopping, visiting friends and playing. Mom, dad and I took Jackson to the Pacific Science Center and to the Pavilion where there was a great train set up.

Our flight home was a bit smoother than the flight out. We were upgraded to first class, so we got a bit more space. Jackson's bladder didn’t make it through this flight either. On our descent down into Chicago, he peed his pants again.

When we arrived in Peoria, we unwrapped a few more gifts. Jackson called Grandpa and said: “I got a kitchen and it’s just my size!”.

2006 (Jackson was three years old).

From The Leslie and Lew Archives - August-October 2006:

The following is a journal entry from August-October 2006.

August 2006.

Jackson and I flew out to our new home in Peoria, Illinois on my 32nd birthday – August 15th. The weather was very hot and humid. Brian was so excited to see us and greeted me with lots of nice birthday presents. I, however, was ready to pull up my sleeves and get to make the house a home.

We joined the River City Club, where we would go everyday for the first couple of weeks. They have group classes at 9:15 every day so Jackson and I would leave the house by nine. He’d play with his “friends” up in the daycare while I tried to get in shape before having another baby. After playing, we’d head out to the pool. Jackson was SO excited – this club has 4 outdoor pools. One has a high dive, low dive and twisty slide. This summer, Jackson just looked, but did not attempt to brave the diving boards or slides.

September 2006

As the summer came to an end, we traveled to see Kristin, Rich and Richie Feronti in Cleveland, OH. We drove through Indianapolis where we stayed our first night. We stayed at the Crown Plaza, which converted two old trains into rooms. The experience was fun for an adult, but Jackson was in 7th heaven and kept waiting for the train to “take off.” He was so upset when we left to head off to the Children’s Museum, but eventually forgot about the train when he say Bob the Builder and the other amazing exhibits for children (Sesame Street; trains; doll houses; dinosaurs etc.).

After Indianapolis, we drove onto Cleveland. We passed Columbus, OH, but didn’t get to see much of the city. Getting to Kristin’s home took us on a very long 2 lane highway for over an hour. We passed an Amish horse and buggy, and a few penitentiaries. On the way to Kristin Feronti’s home in Cleveland Jackson, asked: “Do you want to dance and shake your hips?” I guess that is an important question for a three year old. After sitting in the car for five hours, Jackson said: “I’m done with this. I want out of this seat!” We were all done with it. We enjoyed an evening of pizza and wine and geared up to travel onto Lake Chautauqua, NY the next day.

We caught the tail end of hurricane Ernesto, so our drive was quite miserable in the down-pouring of rain. When we finally arrived at the Lake, Aunt Betsy greeted us and we went to dinner and then spent an evening by the fire catching up over a bottle of wine!

The next day, we toured around town; went to the Chautauqua Institute, a few antique stores, and did a bit of shopping. That night we made dinner at Aunt Betsy’s home and then played cards until the wee hours of the morning.

On Sunday, they local neighborhood had a corn roast. They boiled freshly-harvested corn in a big cauldron over an outdoor fire. After the corn was ready, they’d throw it on the table and then a free-for-all would ensue where everyone grabbed ears of corn, smothered butter and salt on it and ate it in the glow of the fire. Jackson had about 4 ears of corn, and I’ll admit to having at least two!

On Labor Day Monday, we drove 11 hours back to Peoria. Jackson slept for almost 5 hours, which made the trip seem faster.
After our trip, we began to settle in to everyday life. Jackson started preschool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as his gymnastic classes and swimming classes. I also signed him up for AWANAS, a boy scout/bible study type group. Along with AWANAS, Jackson and I started attending a community bible study group on Thursdays. Jackson goes to his own class and memorizes bible verses!

We got to know our neighbors, the McGuires and the Russells quite well. The Russell kids baby-sit and their 12 year old son, Cody, has become a favorite of Jackson’s. The McGuires often come over to visit over a glass of wine, and we visited them twice for dinner, which is a treat because Bridget is a culinary chef.

We attended Pekin’s Marigold festival and Morton’s pumpkin festival. Fall is Illinois’ “Falloween” and every weekend there is some sort of festival going on.

Just as we started to settle into a routine, Brian’s folks came out for a visit and Jackson’s school’s fall harvest festival. They had hayrides, homemade ice cream, face painting, pumpkin rolling and variety of other activities for the kids.

We also visited Tanner’s Apple Orchard with corn mazes etc. and hit the Oktoberfest festival on the river where Jackson won an award for blowing into a Swiss mountain horn.

October 2006:

October brought Brian’s 34th birthday and we packed everyone up and headed up to Chicago to celebrate in style. The first night we headed to the Rainforest Café (our first experience!). Jackson had a blast looking at the alligator, the elephants and gorillas while we ate. The place was entirely overpriced and the food was less than mediocre. Nevertheless, Jackson had fun and sat atop Brian’s shoulders and slapped at the snakes head on our way out. The next day, Jackson and I went shopping on Michigan Avenue. While we waited for the stores to open up at 10:00 we hit Starbucks rod escalators up and down (and up and down and up and down…). On our way to get a classic Chicago style hotdog for lunch, Jackson informed me that he wanted to go back to the hotel. So we headed off for the Allerton Crown Plaza (Tip Top Tap) and rested. Once Jackson woke from his nap, Brian returned from his meetings and we all headed off for the Navy Pier where we walked around for a few hours. They had a Halloween festival going on at the time with characters dressed up as “Demons of the Deep”. Pretty scary for adults – I’m not sure what Jackson was thinking. We walked through a stained glass window exhibit and also had a snack at the “cheeseborger, cheeseborger, cheeseborger” place, which was part of an old Saturday Night Live skit. For dinner we were off to Gino’s East for deep dish Chicago-style pizza! On Saturday, we hit the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Navy Pier again. After lunch at Bubba Gumps we rode the Ferris wheel (25 stories high!) and watched Jackson cry for the entire 7 minute ride. As it was getting close to nap time, we headed back to the hotel, got our car and drove back to Peoria. We took route 29 down the west side of the Illinois River, and the views were amazing. Our camera had run out of juice, so unfortunately we didn’t get any pictures.

October brought not only the changing of colors on the leaves but the neighborhood “booing” where someone leaves a “boo” and some candy on your door and you are suppose to pass it on, by “booing” two other families. Brian particularly got into the “booing” and made some nice sparkly ghosts on black and orange paper. Brian also draped orange lights on our hedge in front of our house. Inside, Jackson had particular fun helping me decorate. He loved the spider candelabra. Jackson was so excited when we finished decorating the house. He asked to light all the “spooky lights” and said he wanted to show Brandon “my spooky house.”

One dark rainy night in October, Jackson asked for some hot chocolate. I made him a cup and tried to explain the significance of “hot” (verses ice cold). I made luke warm milk and added chocolate to it. Jackson took a sip and announced it was “scrumptious!”

On October 28, 2006, Jackson and I headed back to Washington for our first trip home after the move. As fate would have it, we got delayed in Chicago for 3 hours and Jackson didn’t sleep much on the plane despite my attempt to drug him with Dramamine.

Once we arrived in Seattle, Jackson seemed enthralled with the horizontal escalator (a.k.a. people mover). His focus was intent until he spied Brandon and Jackson about a yard away from the end of the people mover. At that point, he took off running. He kept on running even after the people mover ended. He attempted to keep the same pace, but eventually fell forward. The spill did not deter him from his ultimate goal: Brandon and Grandma. But then…a dilemma. On the left…Brandon…on the right…Grandma! After a split second, Jackson made his choice – sorry Brandon!

Brandon had a gift for Jackson – a crayon-colored Halloween candy bag wrapped by Aunt Jeanette. Jackson was bursting at the seams when he opened the gift. We drove back to Mercer Island where we relaxed with a little dinner and wine and let the boys wear themselves out.

The next day, despite the 3:00 wake up time (note to self: do not attempt travel during daylight savings time), we headed off to the Pacific Science Center where they had a Halloween event. After several exhausting hours and an overpriced lunch, we all headed home. We got cheers (and a few jeers) over the boys’ costumes. They were decked out in their Husky Tack Suits.

On Monday, we again rose before the sun. After playing with Grandma and Grandpa we headed off to the mall for mommy to do a bit of shopping. After that, it was home for nap and then Brandon and Hailey came back over to carve pumpkins! Grandpa was awesome at making funny and spooky faces, and Brandon and Jackson were kept busy picking out the pumpkin’s brains and seeds.

Halloween brought more events. Jackson donned his homemade Peter Pan costume and headed out to see Brandon at his school. The perpetual joiner didn’t miss a beat and fit right into Brandon’s school and school parade. Lunch at McDonalds followed and then an attempt at an afternoon nap. After napping, Jackson trick-or-treated in mommy’s old neighborhood – S.E. 59th Street before heading over to Newport Hills for a jaunt in our old neighborhood.

The trip over to Newport Hills was accompanied by a lot of questions and statements about our old home and old school. The candy helped re-focus his attention.

Still on a sugar high from Halloween, we packed the kids in the car and headed down to Olympia to go to Chuck-E-Cheese and see great grandma and grandpa. The day was long!!!!!!!!!!!

After Olympia, we played more at home and spent time visiting and playing.

The plane ride home was relatively peaceful. Jackson slept most of the ride to Chicago, and we boarded the plane as soon as we got to the gate headed for Peoria. Although not delayed, our baggage was lost and we waited 45 minutes for a cab ride home.

The recovery of our trip took a few days! And Christmas is just around the corner!

"Yule Like Peoria"

"Yule Like Peoria" or so the banners say. I often joke that they forgot the question mark. Anyhoo - -Peoria dons it's Christmas attire right after Thanksgiving by hanging the banners light posts around town. I'm not sure if those banners are for newcomers, or to remind people living in Peoria that eventually, if they give it a try...they will like it.

Nevertheless, the banners are cheesy. I remember the first time I saw the banners in 2006, and wondered who thought up the ridiculous slogan. Then I thought: "Probably the same person who named restaurants: "The French Toast" and "2 Chez". Did that person get paid?

Despite the ridiculous advertising, Peoria can be a fun place during the holidays. Last night we enjoyed Jackson's school Christmas Performance. His class sang Three Ships and Suzy Snowflake -- complete with little dance moves. Jackson did very well, and was right in front! Although I have to admit that I was distracted the entire time wondering if Jackson tucked his sweater into his pants, or if his teacher inadvertently did while trying to help him. Thank goodness I got his hair cut, or I would have been thinking about the sweater and his hair the entire time.

The performance was in the new gym, which is outstanding. We sat in the bleachers because the entire gym was full. Charlie did great. I think he liked the music!

Today we are "enjoying" the snow. We are suppose to get 2-4 inches. Our neighborhood, Edgewild, is quite charming. Everyone really decorates for Christmas. We have fun driving around and picking out our favorite homes and decorations. Those Christmas decorations look especially beautiful in the fresh snow. Perhaps my favorite "Midwestern" treat is catching a glimpse of a red cardinal on a snow-studded tree branch. It's absolutely gorgeous, and something distinct to this region. (I also love the fireflies, but wait for a summer post).

So if you are ever in the area at Christmas time, I'm sure "Yule like Peoria" too.

Merry Christmas!

I'll Be Home For Christmas...

Welcome to our family's new blog! I chose the name for several reasons. First, my full name is Leslie Louise Lewallen. "Lulu" was adopted as a knickname by a few close friends. Next, my husband, Brian Lewallen, was called "Lew" in highschool and college. The name I think even stuck around through law school. Anyway, Lulu and Lew's Life will be a blog just about that: our life.

We currently reside in Peoria, Illinois with our two sons: Jackson Marshall Lewallen (5 1/2), and Charles Walker Lewallen (6 months). We also have two little dogs: Duke and Duchess. They are Papillon dogs and I have resolved never again to own dogs. I sincerely believe they are as much work (if not more) than children. The only good thing is that on "normal" days (any day where the temp is above 10 degrees), I can leave them outside.

Brian works for CAT as Corporate Counsel in the environmental and regulatory division, and I have taken time off from the law to focus on my boys. For "work" outside the home, I teach a group fitness class and have gone into business with a friend who custom-designs caps/hats. See: www.marigoldcaps.com. I help with sales/marketing and also write copy for her. It's been so much fun to be a part of it! Beyond that, I'm busy with they typical parental duties and chasing down small dogs who have escaped the invisible fence.

With both extended families still living in Washington, we fly home frequently. While most people groan, take anxiety medications, or simply forget about flying, we have become quasi-experts on traveling with children. We love to travel, and have gotten flying and driving down to a near science. Best advice: expect the unexpected.

We fly out of Chicago on Thursday to head back to Mercer Island, Washington for two weeks! We are very excited.

In the meantime, we have plenty to get organized. Tonight is Jackson's School's Christmas Program. Watch for pictures to be uploaded soon!

Merry Christmas from Lulu and Lew's Life!
(a.k.a. Leslie and Brian Lewallen).
